Funding Cut: Crosstown Greenway Trail

posted Jul 29, 2011, 6:56 PM by Kim Headland

Via HYNCA President, Tony LaColla: Many of us have been involved with or following the Selmon Greenway Trail being planned to run from the Hillsborough River to 22nd Street. The project would involve the development of an attractive multi-use bike/pedestrian trail under the Selmon Expressway through downtown Tampa into the Ybor City/Palmetto beach area expanding connectivity between Ybor City, the Channel District, Downtown and Hyde Park. Funding for the Greenway project is to come from significant cost savings ($45 million) over what was originally budgeted ($109 million projected but $64 million actual cost) in the Selmon Crossway Expressway reconstruction project.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization along with the Florida Department of Transportation has recently re-prioritized projects and the SELMON GREENWAY TRAIL PROJECT HAS BEEN DEFUNDED. The funds originally designated for the Selmon Greenway Trail are now being diverted to other projects around the county!

The Hillsborough County Expressway Authority and the business and civic associations in the downtown core have put in countless hours planning and designing the project only to see the project torpedoed. We cannot let this happen!

If we want to see the important project continue, each of us now needs to step up and let our appointed and elected officials know that defunding the project is a mistake. Prior to Tuesday, August 2 each of us will need to demand the project be re-prioritized and funded. SPREAD THE WORD!

How can you help?
